The rooms and furniture that housed books receive close attention in John Willis Clark's lecture, delivered at Cambridge in 1894. He begins by considering a library both as a place for practical study and as a home for books whose bindings, owners and readers carry their own histories. Roman storage rooms and bookcases provide a starting point for his account of medieval and Renaissance arrangements.
Clark then connects the habits of monastic communities with the rules of Oxford and Cambridge colleges. Annual inspections, the allocation of books to scholars, borrowing pledges and chains securing shared volumes show how these collections worked in daily life. References to illustrations accompany the discussion of library interiors and fittings.
