About this book
The Evolution of Modern Capitalism, subtitled A Study of Machine Production, is by John A. Hobson, author of Problems of Poverty. The title page is dated 1902, London and New York. In the preface he says he chose a focus of study between broad surveys of social evolution and special studies of machine industry.
One passage describes how little international trade mattered to the industry of nations in the eighteenth century, when it dealt mostly in spices, bullion and ornamental cloths. Another uses a diagram to show how spare capacity, such as 500 mills working part-time where 300 could work fully, follows from the forms of capital exceeding what consumption needs. A later paragraph, numbered section 16, turns to quality of consumption and to competition, using the image of two dogs after one bone.
