About this book
Before Paul Morphy's achievements in England and France come the clubs and enthusiasts who helped bring him to public attention. Frederick Milnes Edge begins with Morphy's early games, his father's teaching and the preparations for the first American Chess Congress in New York. Edge describes his own work promoting that gathering, including newspaper publicity and his appointment as one of its secretaries.
Published in 1859, this biographical account combines Morphy's career with club history, portraits of players and anecdotes about chess. Chapters cover the Café de la Régence, matches with Harrwitz and Anderssen, and blindfold play. Correspondence about a proposed match with Staunton reveals another side of competition: dates, challenges and arguments conducted through the press. Edge's openly supportive account offers readers interested in chess history a view of the social networks and public debates surrounding a player's reputation.
