Deep in a forest between Nuremberg and Leipsic, tiny Rootmen make homes among moss, ferns and tree roots. Their seasonal guests, the migrating birds, bring news of the wider world. One princess longs to see the humans she hears about, and her father finally agrees to travel with her in a nest carried by two cranes. The splendid town festivities they witness leave her wishing for a prince with human grandeur on her own small scale.
Robert Reinick's fairy tale fills its miniature world with nutshell boats, talking creatures and a procession of living toys. Prince Nutcracker's arrival brings excitement to the valley, while the Rootmen's treatment of their old bird friends raises questions about loyalty and the appeal of novelty.
