About this book

V.C., A Chronicle of Castle Barfield and of the Crimea is by David Christie Murray. Its first chapter opens with the people of Castle Barfield, who boast that the middle of their High Street is level with the cross of St. Paul's Cathedral, and goes on to describe the open country and Beacon Hargate, where bonfires once warned England.

In one scene Mr. Jervase tells a group of young men that the Queen wants men, and offers a pound as bounty to anyone who takes the Queen's shilling. None of his listeners cheers. In another passage Polson Jervase thinks of Irene, who has told him she would have been proud and happy to be his wife. Elsewhere a woman tells Polson she is on duty at the hospital in a quarter of an hour, while a bird sings nearby.
