About this book
Religious allegiance and social rank meet in Walter Scott's picture of sixteenth-century Scotland. Published in 1820, The Monastery draws its setting from the country around Melrose and the Tweed, where ruined towers and local fairy traditions give the landscape a second life in imagination. Scott's introduction describes a story built around sincere supporters of opposing sides in the Reformation.
The scene with young Halbert Glendinning brings those larger concerns into a room full of people weighing his prospects. The Abbot calls him forward, while Sir Piercie Shafton questions whether someone of humble birth can become a leader. Two monks usher Halbert into the gathering, and his mother worries about his appearance before such company. Readers drawn to historical fiction can find interest in these encounters between authority, ambition and inherited status, alongside a setting shaped by religious change and Border folklore.
