About this book

A battle's lasting consequences matter more to Edward Shepherd Creasy than the size of its armies or the number of lives lost. Published in 1851, this military history selects fifteen engagements from Marathon to Waterloo and asks how their results shaped later events. Its preface treats warfare as a regrettable necessity and explains why courage or tactical skill alone cannot determine a battle's importance.

The chapters connect accounts of conflict with summaries of the events between them. In the passage on Hastings, Creasy discusses Harold's position, the English resistance, accounts of the king's burial and William's coronation. References to earlier historians accompany the narrative. Readers interested in historical cause and effect can follow both the events Creasy describes and his reasoning about which turning points deserve special attention, including his consideration of how a different result might have changed subsequent history.
