About this book

Berea McFarlane, known to everyone as Berrie, can ride, shoot, and outwork most of the men in her father's district. He is the forest supervisor for Colorado's Bear-Tooth Range, and she has grown up among ranchers and rangers on ground she knows better than any of them. Already promised to a jealous rancher, Cliff Belden, she finds herself drawn instead to Wayland Norcross, a frail Eastern visitor who has come West for his health. Garland stated the mismatch plainly in his foreword: a girl desired by three strong men who gives her love to a tourist whose weakness is both her attraction and her burden. Around the courtship he sketches the young Forest Service and the high country he crossed on trips in 1909 and 1910.

About the author

Hamlin Garland

A boyhood on farms in Wisconsin, Iowa and Dakota Territory gave Hamlin Garland the material he worked for fifty years. Born in 1860 near West Salem, Wisconsin, he left for Boston in 1884, read Henry George in the public library, and turned single-tax anger into fiction that refused to make prairie farming look picturesque.
