About this book
Five giants lend their strength to the household, the workshop and the sailing ship, but their tempers can make them dangerous companions. Flare cooks meals and helps turn ore into metal. Roar assists with canals and gardens, while Blow sends kites aloft and drives ships across the sea. The narrator gives each a character of his own, letting young readers work out the powers behind these fanciful names.
This children's tale, revised by Daniel P. Kidder, moves between familiar tasks and examples drawn from travel, industry and conflict. Bounce brings fireworks and help for miners, alongside the dangers of weapons; Rush contributes to the tea table and the work of mines and furnaces. Their useful acts and destructive outbursts carry the lesson together. Readers interested in early educational stories can see how personification turns practical knowledge into a conversation about care, strength and responsibility.
