About this book
Two boys with very different upbringings meet in the western part of England. Tommy Merton has been surrounded by wealth and indulgence, while Harry Sandford, a farmer's son, has learned to work outdoors and show kindness to people and animals. Thomas Day builds his children's novel around this contrast, with Mr Barlow's teaching linking the boys' experiences to lessons about honesty, usefulness and consideration for others.
Stories within the story give the book much of its shape. The contents range across animal encounters, making bread, building a house and observing the natural world. In the middle excerpt, a conversation about the compass leads into navigation, trade and life in Greenland. The book offers readers a view of moral education through storytelling, where practical knowledge and questions about everyday conduct are taught together.
