About this book
Trolls, princesses and farm households share the pages of this collection of folk tales. Sir George Webbe Dasent translates stories gathered by Asbjørnsen and Moe and adds an introductory essay on their origin and spread. The contents include The Three Billy-Goats Gruff, Why the Sea Is Salt and stories about Boots. Sections on mythology and the movement of tales across countries place the narratives beside a historical discussion of storytelling.
Everyday foolishness supplies some of the comedy. In one tale, a woman gives a visitor clothes, money and a horse and cart after he tells her that her late husband needs help in Paradise. Her present husband follows the stranger, opening another opportunity for deception. The mixture of fairy tales, household mishaps and introductory argument offers readers both short stories to enjoy separately and material for thinking about how familiar story patterns travel.
