About this book
Black Forest Village Stories is by Berthold Auerbach, translated by Charles Goepp. A story headed The Gawk addresses a fellow as large as life, with yellow hair cropped very short except in the neck. In another story Aloys, who has taken leave of his corporal, meets Long Hartz's Jake at Nufringen and hears much news of home but not a word of Mary Ann.
A speaker tells how the speaker's father died and left the whole property to the speaker's brother, with ten thousand florins for the speaker and the same for a sister. The speaker says that on looking into the window, the speaker's brother was sitting with an arm round Lizzie's waist, kissing her. In a talk between two characters, Agnes says she won't tell him a word of all that, anyhow.
