About this book
The Gospel of Luke: An Exposition is by Charles R. Erdman, professor of Practical Theology at Princeton Theological Seminary, and carries a 1936 date. After a foreword and introduction, the contents divide Luke into numbered parts, among them The Preface to the Gospel, The Birth and Childhood of Jesus, The Preparation and The Ministry in Galilee, with lettered sections for scenes such as the Annunciation to Mary, the Magnificat and the Boy Jesus at Jerusalem.
Each section sets numbered verses of Luke beside Erdman's comments. In one comment he says Luke writes to confirm the belief of Theophilus, who is apparently his patron and friend. The section on the birth of John foretold gives the verses about the priest Zacharias, his wife Elisabeth and the angel who appears at the altar of incense. Another comment says the lawyers are like men who hold the key to a temple but neither enter nor let others in, and a further one explains the saying about the green tree and the dry.
