About this book
Handley C. G. Moule, later Bishop of Durham, wrote these chapters for newly ordained clergy in the Church of England, especially young curates beginning parish work. The preface is dated from Ridley Hall, Cambridge, in 1892, and the book is dedicated to its students; this text is the fourth edition of 1902.
Moule's central concern is the minister's private life with God. Early chapters on the secret walk with God and the morning watch urge prayer that is not only about the work, and steady reading of the Bible as a believer rather than as a professional. He then turns to conduct among others, the clergy-house and the tongue, and to the practical round of house-to-house visiting, where he advises preparing for every afternoon's calls with prayer and keeping a regular day of rest.
Warm, direct and personal, the book will interest anyone studying Victorian Anglican pastoral life, and readers in ministry today who want counsel on prayer, study and caring for people.
