About this book
A search for wild lilies brings the narrator into friendship with Harry and Bessy Leigh, two children living beside the Hampshire woods. Their father makes brooms, and the family is recovering from his long illness. The children gather fuel, help with the visitor's horse and flower basket, and begin selling lilies to earn money toward a pig for their new home.
Mary Russell Mitford sets this short story among wooded slopes, open heath and country lanes, describing plants and changing seasons alongside the family's efforts to make a living. Later encounters introduce the sale of pine cones and the narrator's continued interest in the children. Readers drawn to close observations of rural life will find a story concerned with work, small acts of assistance and the bonds that grow through repeated meetings.
