About this book

The Gulf and Inland Waters is the third volume of the series The Navy in the Civil War. A. T. Mahan, named on the title page as a captain in the U.S. Navy, says in the preface that his narrative follows chiefly the official reports.

One passage describes the bluffs along the Mississippi, from Hickman in Kentucky past Memphis to Vicksburg, Grand Gulf, Port Hudson and Baton Rouge, as points that could be fortified to dispute an enemy's passage. It says Union forces moved against these defences from both ends of the line and met at Vicksburg. Another passage follows the ships Hartford and Richmond past the batteries, and one shot enters the engine-room of the Richmond. The index lists names such as Butler, Banks and the gunboat Cairo.
