About this book

The book carries the title The Haciendas of Mexico An Artist's Record and names James A. Michener for the foreword and Gisela von Wobeser for the introduction. A list of captions describes items at haciendas, among them a narrow-gauge railway passenger car drawn by mule or horse at Hacienda de Sodzil, Yucatán, and a century-old carriage at Hacienda de Dolores Noriatenco, Puebla. A caption describes Hacienda Corralitos, Corralitos, Chihuahua, as a one-million-acre cattle and mining hacienda, 1750.

The text lists the staff of an estate as including, among others, minor supervisors, field workers, cowhands, shepherds, blacksmiths, masons, saddlers, and sometimes a doctor. The text says the staff were all responsible to the hacendado who lived on the hacienda or who was an absentee owner-administrator. The text says the haciendas became increasingly self-sufficient during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and made every effort to provide for their own needs, among them water, food, carriages and linen.
