About this book
Italian Villas and Their Gardens is by Edith Wharton and is illustrated with pictures by Maxfield Parrish and by photographs. The contents list names Florentine, Sienese, Roman, Genoese and Lombard villas, among others. The dedication is to Vernon Lee, who better than any one else has understood and interpreted the garden-magic of Italy. The Botanic Garden of Padua is called famous, founded in 1545, and said to be the oldest in Italy.
The Prato della Valle is described as a public square before the church of Santa Giustina, with an encircling canal crossed by marble bridges. A villa is described as forming a semicircle at the back, enclosing a paved court, with a ground floor that is an open vaulted arcade adorned with Zucchero's celebrated frescoes. A villa is celebrated as the coolest villa on Como, lying on a small bay on the east side of the lake and facing due north.
