About this book
The story of When the Owl Cries takes place at the Hacienda de Petaca. The text includes a plan of the Hacienda Petaca, Colima, Mexico. A character named Raul Medina sits in his garden and notices the odd colors, while a tattered mass of yellow cloud hangs over the great Mexican volcano.
Raul's thoughts switch to everyday problems: a milch cow had died, the poultry had gotten out of their pen, a mule had ripped a tendon on a stone fence, and a cowboy lay seriously ill. A speaker says that María wants the speaker to come to Guadalajara soon and is worried about the speaker after the quakes. Raul says he is going for Manuel and will see about Father Gabriel, and says Let's fight for this place!
