About this book
The Handbook of Conundrums discusses puns made through different meanings of words and similarities of sound, alongside conundrums created by the interchange of languages. The discussion credits Shakespeare with using the conundrum for both grave and gay effects and gives a dialogue from Twelfth Night as an example. The dialogue has a clown question Olivia about mourning her brother, arguing against grief when she believes her brother's soul is in heaven.
The riddles turn advice into something everyone requires, gives and asks for, but very few take. A candle riddle describes living on one's own substance and dying after consuming it. A clock riddle gives hands without fingers and a tick without a bed.
