About this book

The Salem horror is credited to Henry Kuttner. The introductory line speaks of a ghastly horror from the witchcraft days of three centuries ago that reared its dreadful form in the Witch Room of that old house in Derby Street. A man named Carson first notices sounds in his cellar and ascribes them to the rats. Superstitious Polish mill workers in Derby Street whisper tales about the first occupant of the ancient house, Abigail Prinn.

A rat leads Carson to the Witch Room. A man walking a street feels a dim and disturbing familiarity about the shapes of the houses and the outline of the roofs, though to his knowledge he had never been on this street before. A pseudopod of blackness elongates from a central mass, clutches a corpse-like being and drags it back to the pit and over the brink.
