About this book

A neglected country house looks unsettling even in bright autumn sunshine. In Charles Dickens's Three Ghost Stories, the narrator arrives by train to inspect a possible home, already irritated by a fellow passenger's solemn claims about messages from spirits. His practical observations of shabby repairs, badly placed trees and village avoidance give the opening its mixture of comedy and unease. The house needs no storm or midnight darkness to suggest that something is wrong.

The haunting also turns inward, toward a childhood altered by a father's death, family debt and a cold, hostile school. Here, a ghost can be the memory of innocence that an adult cannot recover. Elsewhere, a railway worker struggles with warnings he cannot understand and a responsibility that weighs heavily on him. These short stories suit readers interested in how Dickens brings ordinary surroundings, anxious thought and remembered loss into supernatural fiction.
