About this book
At nineteen, Ambrose Thompson steps out into a Kentucky spring dressed for travel, hoping to leave Pennyroyal before his neighbours interfere. His horse and gig are ready, but his dog Moses and the energetic Susan Barrows help turn a quiet departure into village entertainment. Margaret Vandercook introduces a tall, awkward young man whose delight in flowers and adventure sits comfortably beside his susceptibility to other people's demands.
The novel follows marriage and community life through four parts, each headed by a wife. In a later episode, Ambrose returns Emily Dunham's lost hairbrush and admits his part in a raid against her. Her amused response brings warmth to an uneasy confession, while his friendship with his shop partner Miner becomes strained by jealousy. Village speech, physical comedy and the pressure of local opinion give readers a close view of courtship within a small Kentucky community.
