About this book
The History and Practice of the Art of Photography is by Henry H. Snelling and treats the production of pictures through the agency of light. The text describes the earliest attempt of the English savans: paper sponged over with a solution of nitrate of silver and placed behind a painting on glass, which Mr. Wedgwood and Sir Humphry Davey could not fix.
The text also gives an experiment to be found in old books, in which chalk is dissolved in aquafortis to the consistence of milk and a strong solution of silver is added. A sand clock, or time keeper, is described as a glass tube about twelve inches long, by one in diameter, half filled with fine sand. The text gives colouring directions, including that the flesh tints are produced by the use of light red, deepened towards the shaded parts with yellow ochre, blue and carmine mixed with indigo.
