About this book
The title page gives the place and date as London, 1844. In one passage the author says the plates have been obtained by the mere action of light upon sensitive paper, formed by optical and chemical means alone, without anyone who knows the art of drawing, and that he discovered the principles of photogenic drawing about ten years earlier.
The contents list plates of Queen's College, Oxford, the boulevards of Paris, articles of china and of glass, a bust of Patroclus, an open door, a haystack, a ladder and Lacock Abbey. In another passage he points out that the camera depicts every object at once, and compares the object glass to the eye and the sensitive paper to the retina. Later plates include the Martyrs' Monument, with a statue of Bishop Latimer, and Westminster Abbey.
