About this book
The History of Court Fools concerns the fool of legend and antiquity, the fool by right of office, and female fools among the subjects named in its contents. An account of the jester of Frederick II of Denmark describes a monarch perplexed by a bargain made, or half made, with some English merchants. The proposed purchase of an island calls for scarlet cloth sufficient to reach around its shores and gold for every fold.
The monarch wants to break the bargain without seeming to break his word. The fool advises making the purchasers remove the article purchased as soon as they pay for it. The account says the delighted king escapes his bargain with the fool’s aid.
