About this book
Royalty in All Ages concerns the amusements, eccentricities, superstitions and frolics of the kings and queens of Europe. The account of Christina says that an anonymous letter advised her to put her house in order and destroy the indecent paintings and statues crowding her mansion. Christina is described as smiling and putting the warning into the fire, little anticipating that its prediction would be fulfilled the following year.
Tradition, for whatever it may be worth, places Charles I. on Leith Links when a courier brought news of Sir Phelim O’Neal’s rising in Ireland in 1641. The Duke of York is described as frequently seen at a golf party on the Leith Links while residing at Holyrood in 1679.
