About this book

England under the Tudors is by Arthur D. Innes, in its fourth edition. An introductory note by the general editor says that new material has been accumulating much faster than it can be assimilated or absorbed.

The history says the opposing forces met at Stoke within a fortnight, and that after a brief but fierce conflict the rebel army was crushed, Lincoln and several leaders were slain, and their puppet was taken captive. The history says Simnel was merely relegated to a position, appropriate to his origin, in the royal kitchen, and was subsequently promoted to be one of the King’s falconers. The text calls a Parliament noteworthy for having given a definitely legal status to the judicial authority of the Council by the establishment of the Court thereafter known as the Star Chamber. The text says Lady Jane had been brought up in retirement, and that her charms of mind and of character, though known to posterity, were quite unknown to the world in her own day.
