About this book
The History of the Remarkable Life of John Sheppard is by Daniel Defoe. The opening says the book contains a particular account of his many robberies and escapes, and its list includes, among others, his robbing the Shop of Mr. Bains in White-Horse-Yard of 24 Yards of Fustian. An address describes a criminal who "declar'd and has manifested that the Bars are not made that can either keep him Out, or keep him In". The address adds that the history is not composed of Fiction, Fable, or Stories placed at York, Rome, or Jamaica, but Facts done at your Doors.
Men who search a man find a broad Knife and two of the watches he had taken out of Mr. Martin's Shop, one under each Armpit. A little house on the Common that sold liquors carries the inscription "I have brought my Hogs to a fair Market" on its sign. A first-person passage describes meeting a Bully Hack of the Town at Shoe-lane end, who would have shoved the speaker down, and says "I soon Coller'd him".
