About this book
Montague Summers is the author of this history of witchcraft and demonology. The pages sampled come mostly from the notes and the bibliography, which cite works in Latin, French and English, and name Guazzo, Boguet, De Lancre and Görres as chief sources for the account of the ceremonies.
One long list gives French studies of sorcery with place and year of printing, among them a four-volume work on magic and sorcery in France, Paris, 1900, and a study of the sorcerers of Lorient, Vannes, 1885. Another passage says an account of the Sabbat would need a large volume, because the rites could be reconstructed in detail though their order varied from place to place, and it quotes Dom Calmet, whom the author calls mistaken.
