About this book
Benjamin of Tudela's Itinerary is presented here as a critical text, translation and commentary by Marcus Nathan Adler, first issued in London in 1907. The contents list a map of Benjamin's route and an introduction on Islam in the Middle Ages and the object of his journey, then the itinerary itself, running through places such as Saragossa, Barcelona, Rome, Naples, Corfu and Thebes.
In one passage on Alexandria, merchants from many lands trade in a busy city where each nation has its own inn and traders from India bring spices. A marble sepulchre by the coast is engraved with beasts and birds in writing that no one can now read, and the account puts the Jewish population of Alexandria at about 3,000. In the commentary, Benjamin's statements are compared with those of Edrisi and Abulfeda.
