About this book

The Hoosier School-boy is a book by Edward Eggleston. The contents list chapters called The New Scholar, King Milkmaid and Little Christopher Columbus. Mr. Ball demands where the new boy lives, and the boy answers On Ferry Street.

The new boy says they call him Jack, for the most part, and that his name is John Dudley. The boy says he has been half through fractions and that his father taught him. Ben Berry guesses it is Mr. Higbie who is going to shoot, Pewee guesses it is Bugbee, the watchman, going to arrest them, and Riley says it is Mr. Ball himself, who will whip them all. Bob says he is going to cut the string where it goes around the tree, and Jack says he will capture the string.
