About this book
The contents of The Hopi Indians include entries on birth, marriage and death as well as traditions and history. The Hopi are described as looking back to a mythic time when they believe their ancestors lived in a place with plentiful corn and abundant rain. The account of sacerdotal societies says each tells of its own hero, who generally brought a bride transmitting knowledge of altars, songs and prayers to her son.
A Katcina hero's story describes a rabbit hunt leading to a region without snow, where other Katcina people danced amid beautiful gardens. The dance account describes two women dressed as men, carrying bows and arrows and shooting at corn husks to represent lightning striking and fertilizing the fields.
