About this book

Chalmers sits pale beside a window, with tall candles casting an amber light across his face, in an apartment where he wants nothing modern. Chalmers prefers illuminated manuscripts to automobiles and stone gargoyles to radios and adding-machines. The narrator discovers that Chalmers has been studying the mathematical formulæ of a celebrated contemporary physicist.

Chalmers makes convulsive sounds resembling a dog's barking and writhes in a circle while the narrator appeals to him to stop. A report states that Chalmers entertained an unknown guest before an earthquake, with police suspicion pointing strongly toward the visitor. The report of James Morton, chemist and bacteriologist, calls a fluid sent for analysis the most peculiar he has examined.
