About this book

A young Navy radio operator faces his first flight into a hurricane while forecasters in Miami answer anxious calls from people ashore. Ivan Ray Tannehill uses this tense opening to introduce the practical work of observing tropical storms and getting reports to forecast offices. Published in 1955, the book combines accounts of flights through hurricanes and typhoons with the development of storm warnings, radio communication and radar observation.

Crew testimony shows how difficult these measurements could be. Navigator James P. Dalton recalls the violent turbulence of a 1945 flight from Morrison Field, including misleading altitude readings and the difficulty of measuring winds. Illustrations show aircraft, crew stations, storm damage and views into storm centres. Readers interested in weather history will find a close account of the instruments and people involved in collecting information from dangerous skies.
