About this book

A kite, a wire and a receiver help explain how Marconi's signals crossed the Atlantic. Archibald Williams uses such practical details to introduce young readers to inventions that were reshaping communication, transport and industry. This 1907 volume explains wireless telegraphy alongside telephones, sound recording, solar motors, motor cars and mechanical flight. Its chapters use familiar comparisons to make physical principles understandable, including an account of the ether as scientists of the period conceived it.

The discussion of moving pictures brings the reader close to the machinery: film pauses for exposure, shutters block the lens during movement, and cameras and projectors serve different tasks. Williams also follows the handling and development of film and the organisation of a company showing pictures around the world. Read today, the book offers a historical view of both invention and the effort to explain new technology to a broad audience.
