About this book
George Parker Holden, M.D., gives a detailed description of building a split-bamboo fishing rod, prefaced by a dissertation on the joys of angling. The title page adds information on growing silkworm-gut at home, suggestions on landing-nets and other equipment and on the angler's camp, and calls the book profusely illustrated.
In the chapter on bamboo as a rod material he says good rods are made not from the American southern species but chiefly from Indian bamboo or Tonkin cane. He says that hard-fibered stock gives a clear ring when struck, gives prices for six-foot sticks and glued-up joints, and describes making cork grasps from cork rings or large corks, and a cedar reel-seat. Another passage recommends a tramp through the woods and camp life over a hotel in the mountains.
