About this book

Louis Figuier's illustrated natural history covers reptiles and birds. One passage notes that many serpents and lizards shine with metallic colours, that chameleons are found only in the Old World, and that the reptiles and batrachians of early ages were far more numerous and much larger than those of today. The same passage gives little more than 1,500 described species of reptiles and batrachians, 100 of them European.

Another passage explains that batrachians breathe by gills at birth and so resemble fishes, then change permanently as they age. In the part on birds, the story of the Velvet Duck tells how arguments about its feathers, blood and fat were used to extend the Lenten permission to eat it. Numbered figures illustrate the pages that follow, among them the Bohemian Waxwing and the Spotted Fly-catcher, each with its scientific name.
