About this book

A promise of beautiful flowers draws little Bab-ba from his garden towards the jungle. The child lives on the Simla Hills in India, where his father is an English officer and his nurse cares for him. His days on the verandah include games with Mioux-Mioux the cat, Wooff-Wooff the dog and visits from the birds he feeds. After Bab-ba interrupts Hoodo the snake's attempt to catch those birds, the snake begins planning revenge.

G. E. Farrow gives the animals voices and recognizable habits in this short children's picture book. As Bab-ba follows Hoodo, a tiger, a wolf and a bear enter the story, while his pets become concerned about his disappearance. He greets strange creatures by comparing them with familiar companions. Simple dialogue and repeated animal names suit readers who enjoy animal tales, and the tension comes from Hoodo's scheming and the child's trusting affection.
