About this book

The Kashf al-mahjúb, by ‘Ali ibn ‘Usman Hujviri, is described as “The oldest Persian treatise on Súfiism.” One account tells of Harim b. Ḥayyán, who went to visit Uways Qaraní, could not discover him for a long time, and at last saw Uways, clad in a patched frock, performing an ablution on the banks of the Euphrates. Uways tells Harim “Keep watch over thy heart,” glossed as “Guard thy heart from thoughts of ‘other’.”

A chapter headed The Uncovering of the Third Veil: Concerning Faith gives the Apostle’s words, “Faith is belief in God and His angels and His (revealed) books.” The text says the Mu`tazilites hold that faith includes all acts of devotion, theoretical as well as practical, and that sin puts a man outside the pale of faith. Murta`ish says “Ṣúfiism is good nature,” which is of three sorts, the first being towards God, by fulfilling His Commandments without hypocrisy.
