About this book
Royal families, merchants and talking birds share the pages of Somadeva Bhatta's collection of tales from India. C. H. Tawney's translation from Sanskrit follows Udayana, king of Vatsa, and his son Naraváhanadatta through a framework that makes room for many smaller stories. The contents bring together divine curses, former births, clever advisers and the changing fortunes of people at court and beyond it.
Storytelling also serves an immediate purpose within that framework. Gomukha comforts Naraváhanadatta by relating a conflict between crows and owls, opening with a defeated bird king seeking advice from his ministers. Alongside the tales, Tawney's notes discuss wordplay, explain translation difficulties and compare incidents with stories from Bengal and European collections. Readers interested in folklore can explore both the linked adventures and the notes that trace similarities between stories told in different places.
