About this book
Folklore of the Santal Parganas was translated by Cecil Henry Bompas of the Indian Civil Service and is dated 1909. Its preface describes the Santals as a Munda tribe and lists village roles: the headman or manjhi, his assistant the paranik, the village priest called the naeke and the village constable called the godet.
The tales are numbered. In one, Lela enrols as an attorney in the city, and a Raja sends him to a mountain to bring back the Chandmoni Kusum flower. In another, a hair taken from a Rakhas's head makes a golden palace appear when Lita and his companions speak to it. A story called The Bread Tree tells of a boy who leaves a piece of his bread on a rock, and a tree grows from it that bears loaves instead of fruit.
