About this book
The Kingdom of Slender Swords is a book by Hallie Erminie Rives. A foreword by His Excellency Baron Makino says it has been his happy fortune to have made the acquaintance of the gifted author of this book. A small bungalow looking out across the bay bears over its gateway the dubious appellation "The Roost". Under a striped awning, three men are grouped about a miniature roulette table.
A tiny brass hibachi, or fire-bowl, sits before each inmate's cushion, with a live coal in its ashes for the lighting of pipes and cigarettes. Barbara felt herself engulfed in a wave of complex emotions, torn with a great repugnance, a greater joy, and a sense of acute pity that overmastered them both. The text says that the yacht's walls had rolled away, and that a stricken man was speaking.
