About this book
The Kiss and Its History is by a professor of Romance Philology at the University of Copenhagen and is translated by William Frederick Harvey. The text says that W. von Kempelen, in a book entitled The Mechanism of Human Speech (Wien, 1791), divides kisses into three sorts, according to their sound.
The text retells the tale of Beauty and the Beast, where the transformed prince begged the young maiden he had carried off on his back for a kiss, and says that in this case the kiss redeems from death. The text cites Alfred Grandidier, a French traveller, who says of the nose-kiss in Madagascar that it always excites the merriment of Europeans, and yet has its origin in an extremely refined idea.
