About this book

Eight watchers gather beside a beacon on Pendle Hill in November 1536, looking across moors, forests and streams toward Whalley Abbey. William Harrison Ainsworth opens his historical novel with the Pilgrimage of Grace, a rising bound up with the suppression of religious houses. Armed sentinels, monks and a banner representing Abbot John Paslew establish a Lancashire landscape where religious allegiance carries political force.

The book also follows fears of witchcraft in the district. In a later conversation, Roger Nowell and a rector discuss Mary Baldwyn's death and the duties of magistrates and clergy, while Potts records their words and cites the king's views. Their exchanges show how belief in hidden powers shapes judgments about suffering and responsibility. Detailed scenery and argumentative dialogue give readers a way into the novel's historical atmosphere, with local places, church authority and supernatural suspicion closely connected.
