The Last Chronicle of Barset is the sixth and final novel in Anthony Trollope’s beloved Barsetshire series, published in 1867 and regarded by many readers, including Trollope himself, as his finest work. At its heart is the Reverend Josiah Crawley, a poor and proud clergyman accused of stealing a cheque, who cannot even remember how the money came into his hands. As the charge divides the county and threatens to ruin his family, Trollope brings back the clergymen, squires, and women of Barset one last time to weigh justice, pride, and mercy. Anthony Trollope (1815-1882) was an English novelist of the Victorian era, celebrated for the Barsetshire and Palliser series, whose warm, realistic novels of society and character remain widely loved.
