About this book
The Lesser Bourgeoisie (The Middle Classes) is by Honoré de Balzac, translated by Katharine Prescott Wormeley. The dedication To Constance-Victoire calls the book one of those books which come into the mind, whence no one knows, and speaks of showing the modern Hypocrite in action.
A passage says that from the first days of the marriage, Brigitte subdued the unfortunate Madame Thuillier with a touch of the spur and a jerk of the bit. The text says Celeste, thoroughly understood by Brigitte, was extremely gentle by nature and pious in the fullest acceptation of the word. La Peyrade had mentioned an unforeseen and inexplicable difficulty by which all the efforts of the Comtesse du Bruel had been paralyzed, but Thuillier did not take comfort in the explanation. A speaker says that Vautrin is a man of genius whose passions dragged him down, and calls himself the prefect of the secret police of diplomacy.
