About this book
The Life of Tolstoy, First Fifty Years, is by Aylmer Maude, whose preface says he wrote the work because so many among us are interested in Tolstoy and so few seem to understand him. The preface adds that the writer lived in Russia for twenty-three years, knew Tolstoy well for several years and visited him frequently in Moscow.
A recollection says Aunty Tatiána had the greatest influence on the speaker's life and from early childhood taught the spiritual delight of love. The book says Tolstoy owes his excellent knowledge of German and French to the fact that his father, following a custom common among well-to-do Russians, engaged foreign teachers. A first-person account says Nicholas considers the writer a very agreeable travelling companion, except for his cleanliness, and is cross because he says the writer changes his linen 12 times a day.
