About this book

This book collects letters of Anton Chekhov to his family and friends, translated by Constance Garnett, with a translator's note and a biographical sketch. The contents list letters to his brother Mihail, his cousin, his uncle, his sister, and to correspondents including Leikin, Suvorin, Grigorovitch, Korolenko and Pleshtcheyev, with places such as Moscow and Taganrog.

One passage about his life recalls a country place with endless avenues of lime-trees where Chekhov worked on his story The Duel, and another tells how he loved the bells of Moscow and went to hear the Easter bells. In a letter written from a steamer he describes two lieutenants, one a loud-voiced braggart who knows Mickiewicz by heart, the other a quiet geographer. A further letter thanks its recipient for good wishes on Chekhov's marriage and mentions his fiancée.
