About this book

A minstrel's songs of brave knights stir young Ederyn's ambition in a great earl's hall. The orphan page longs to earn a place among King Arthur's followers, but the feats described seem beyond his strength. Then he learns of another test: Arthur seeks people whose faithfulness can withstand repeated trials, with Merlin sending the summons. Ederyn promises to listen at dawn and answer each call.

Annie Fellows Johnston gives this short tale the atmosphere of a spoken legend, with a returning song, mysterious tokens and meetings in lonely places. Ederyn's duties as a servant matter alongside the dangers of his quests. Later, the pleasures of the Castle of Content and affection for a young woman test his resolve in a different way. Readers interested in stories of knighthood will find an account of courage built around patience, promises and the effort required to keep them.
